I don’t know a place or a people that can amaze me more than East Greenland! I’m honoured of all my adventures near Tasiilaq and the nearby settlements… And us at the west coast needs to respect them and acknowledge their demands and issues…

🇬🇧Just 2 hours from Nuuk lies a place far from everything.

Hidden deep in the fjords, in Kapisillit, you’ll find a true Arctic escape — a place few people ever experience.

Here, the climate changes. The air feels different. The silence is real.

From the cabin, endless nature surrounds you.
Just one hour away on foot, the icefjord awaits.

Spend your days hiking, fishing, or exploring untouched wilderness.
And your evenings in warmth and comfort, surrounded by stillness.

With space for 6-8 guests, this is more than just a stay — it’s a place to disconnect and experience Greenland as it truly is.

Some are left to weather. Over years of wind, snow, and sub-zero temperatures, the wood turns silver-grey – a colour the Arctic gives to anything that stays long enough. The grain deepens. The surface roughens. What once looked new starts to look like it belongs.

In East Greenland`s settlements, houses are built on stilts or rock foundations to keep them above the permafrost and shifting snowpack. There are no paved roads connecting them. No building codes written for this climate. Each house is an improvisation – adapted, repaired, and endured.

The orange window frames aren`t random. Against grey wood and white snow, even a small splash of colour becomes a landmark – visible from across the fjord, recognisable in low light, a quiet signal that says: someone lives here.

💡 Useful tip: East Greenland`s settlements – places like Tiilerilaaq, Kulusuk, Kuummiut, Sermiligaaq, and Isertoq – are home to fewer than a few hundred people each. Visiting them is possible but requires local transport, flexibility, and respect for the pace of daily life.

The prettiest houses aren`t always the painted ones.

In East Greenland`s smaller settlements, houses don`t fight the winter – they disappear into it. Snow drifts climb walls, bury staircases, and reshape the landscape around every building until the line between architecture and terrain almost vanishes.

This pink house in Tiilerilaaq – one of the smallest settlements in the Ammassalik region, home to fewer than 100 people – has stood through decades of Arctic winters. Its colour isn`t decorative. In Greenland, brightly painted houses serve a practical purpose: visibility in whiteout conditions and during the dark months when landmarks disappear.

In Tiilerilaaq, the houses don`t stand out from the landscape. They belong to it.

The Arctic is not merely frozen—it is a landscape defined by transformation. 🌱❄️

Today, we explore this transformation through language. A single Greenlandic word (Kalaallisut) can reveal profound insight into both environment and culture.

Word of the Week: Upernaq (oo-per-nak).

Upernaq means The Reawakening—the season when the Midnight Sun returns, icefjords begin to calve, and the landscape is renewed by flowing meltwater. ☀️🧊

Understanding Upernaq is essential to the Arctic experience:
• It shapes our itineraries, marking the ideal season for Arctic char migration
• It reinforces sustainable travel, guided by natural rhythms
• It redefines luxury—not through excess, but through rare, sensory connection

Upernaq reminds us that even the most extreme environments are capable of renewal—quietly, patiently, and beautifully.

oo-per-nak.
We invite you to experience the reawakening in 2026. 🏔️🗺️

Food photos from Greenland 🇬🇱

When I travel, I always try to eat local food — even when I’m not on a dedicated food trip, like my recent visit to Greenland.

Greenland has an abundance of ingredients from both the sea and the mountains, served at everything from international restaurants to Asian eateries — of which there are quite a few, since many foreigners work in Greenland, particularly in the service industries.

Here are some of the local delicacies I was lucky enough to taste — ingredients that are hunted, fished, and gathered from the sea and the Greenlandic mountains.

Water & ice — tap water here can be wonderfully fresh and flavorful. And then there’s the ice: thousands of years old, hauled straight from the Arctic fjord — perfect in drinks making every sip feel like a small piece of history.

From the ocean: Red fish, halibut (often smoked), clams, crab, Arctic cod and salmon.

Sea mammals: Seal and whale.

From the land: Musk ox, reindeer and lamb.
Greenlandic coffee — a warming classic not to be missed.
Maybe you’re not going to Greenland for the food — but for the spectacular nature, outdoor activities and unique experiences. Choosing locally sourced food is a wonderful way to support the local community along the way.

I didn’t manage to try the Arctic hare — winter-white like snow — but I met a hunter with a big smile, telling me it would be his Easter meal. 🐇

Goodbye Greenland and thank you for all and the lovely cappuccino with a cute little polar bear on top! 🐻‍❄️ (last photo)

The yellow trail hike in Ilulissat, Greenland is a moderate hike, which is easy to follow, thanks to the yellow painted rocks marking the route. The trail starts at the edge of town and goes along the Icefjord and offers stunning views of the Icefjord, glaciers and if your lucky, whales. You’re more likely to hear them before you see them.

The tundra landscape is very similar to what you would see in other parts of the Arctic, offering the fall pickings of cranberries, blueberries and blackberries.

Already dreaming about summer in the Arctic.

Last September, I spent two weeks exploring East Greenland with quarkexpeditions. It was my first time heading into the polar region, and an experience that I’d been counting down to for months.

I remember standing on the deck one morning, coffee in hand, watching as we slowly moved through brash ice towards the glacier, with towering peaks around us. I had my camera on a timelapse capturing the ships forward movement, so my hands were free and I had some time to just sip my coffee and take it all in. That moment was special, and I was able to be completely present while listening to the cracking ice on the hull and stillness in the air.
A few moments later we spotted polar bears on the ice, and it was straight back to the rush of excitement that this wild place brings so easily.

That pretty much sums up this trip, one minute you’re completely still, the next you’re scrambling for your camera with your heart racing. It never lets you settle for too long and honestly that’s exactly what I loved about it.

Have you ever done an expedition trip or is it on your list? Shoot me a DM, I’d love to help get you out there!
