The Arctic is not merely frozen—it is a landscape defined by transformation. 🌱❄️

Today, we explore this transformation through language. A single Greenlandic word (Kalaallisut) can reveal profound insight into both environment and culture.

Word of the Week: Upernaq (oo-per-nak).

Upernaq means The Reawakening—the season when the Midnight Sun returns, icefjords begin to calve, and the landscape is renewed by flowing meltwater. ☀️🧊

Understanding Upernaq is essential to the Arctic experience:
• It shapes our itineraries, marking the ideal season for Arctic char migration
• It reinforces sustainable travel, guided by natural rhythms
• It redefines luxury—not through excess, but through rare, sensory connection

Upernaq reminds us that even the most extreme environments are capable of renewal—quietly, patiently, and beautifully.

oo-per-nak.
We invite you to experience the reawakening in 2026. 🏔️🗺️

Food photos from Greenland 🇬🇱

When I travel, I always try to eat local food — even when I’m not on a dedicated food trip, like my recent visit to Greenland.

Greenland has an abundance of ingredients from both the sea and the mountains, served at everything from international restaurants to Asian eateries — of which there are quite a few, since many foreigners work in Greenland, particularly in the service industries.

Here are some of the local delicacies I was lucky enough to taste — ingredients that are hunted, fished, and gathered from the sea and the Greenlandic mountains.

Water & ice — tap water here can be wonderfully fresh and flavorful. And then there’s the ice: thousands of years old, hauled straight from the Arctic fjord — perfect in drinks making every sip feel like a small piece of history.

From the ocean: Red fish, halibut (often smoked), clams, crab, Arctic cod and salmon.

Sea mammals: Seal and whale.

From the land: Musk ox, reindeer and lamb.
Greenlandic coffee — a warming classic not to be missed.
Maybe you’re not going to Greenland for the food — but for the spectacular nature, outdoor activities and unique experiences. Choosing locally sourced food is a wonderful way to support the local community along the way.

I didn’t manage to try the Arctic hare — winter-white like snow — but I met a hunter with a big smile, telling me it would be his Easter meal. 🐇

Goodbye Greenland and thank you for all and the lovely cappuccino with a cute little polar bear on top! 🐻‍❄️ (last photo)

The yellow trail hike in Ilulissat, Greenland is a moderate hike, which is easy to follow, thanks to the yellow painted rocks marking the route. The trail starts at the edge of town and goes along the Icefjord and offers stunning views of the Icefjord, glaciers and if your lucky, whales. You’re more likely to hear them before you see them.

The tundra landscape is very similar to what you would see in other parts of the Arctic, offering the fall pickings of cranberries, blueberries and blackberries.

Already dreaming about summer in the Arctic.

Last September, I spent two weeks exploring East Greenland with quarkexpeditions. It was my first time heading into the polar region, and an experience that I’d been counting down to for months.

I remember standing on the deck one morning, coffee in hand, watching as we slowly moved through brash ice towards the glacier, with towering peaks around us. I had my camera on a timelapse capturing the ships forward movement, so my hands were free and I had some time to just sip my coffee and take it all in. That moment was special, and I was able to be completely present while listening to the cracking ice on the hull and stillness in the air.
A few moments later we spotted polar bears on the ice, and it was straight back to the rush of excitement that this wild place brings so easily.

That pretty much sums up this trip, one minute you’re completely still, the next you’re scrambling for your camera with your heart racing. It never lets you settle for too long and honestly that’s exactly what I loved about it.

Have you ever done an expedition trip or is it on your list? Shoot me a DM, I’d love to help get you out there!

🇬🇱 Postcard from Ilulissat

Four days in one of Greenland’s most beloved destination — and it’s easy to understand why.

🧊 Icebergs older than civilization drifting silently past our boat as we sailed the Ilulissat Icefjord — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each one a different shape, a different shade of blue, a different kind of awe.

❄️ Snow scooters across frozen landscapes with sweeping views over Disko Bay. A dog sled ride — wolves howling in the distance — that felt like stepping into another century. A visit to the childhood home of Knud Rasmussen, the legendary Greenlandic-Danish explorer who essentially mapped the Arctic world and described the common inuit culture from Alaska to Greenland.

🏛️ And then Dorte Mandrup’s breathtaking Icefjord Centre — architecture so quietly powerful it almost disappears into the landscape.

🍽️ Evenings spent at restaurants serving the most local catch — crab, reindeer, musk ox — all prepared with an international touch – I am on my way with a post about my food experiences in Greenland 🇬🇱

❤️ Tak for en spændende og særlig udsøgt rejse til gode venner og jeres mange gode input.
What a privilege to experience this together with friends.

This is what the edge of the ice sheet looks like.

Greenland`s inland ice covers roughly 1.7 million square kilometres – an area larger than France, Spain, and Germany combined. In East Greenland, you can stand on bare rock and watch it meet the sea. No barrier. No transition. Just ancient ice pushing toward open water, breaking apart into the thousands of fragments drifting across the fjord.

Every piece you see here was once part of something unimaginably large. Every piece is on its own journey now.

❄️ Fun fact: The Greenland Ice Sheet is up to 3 kilometres thick in places and holds enough frozen water to raise global sea levels by over 7 metres. What you see from shore is just the outermost edge of something continental in scale.

Some views don`t need a caption. They need silence.
