The hike in Ilulissat marked our last day in Greenland. 🇬🇱

The hike started at the Icefjord Centre and took us an hour to reach the viewpoint. We went off-trail without notice halfway, and we couldn`t find the trail markings. (We continued off-trail because I had a GPS signal and could see where we were on my phone.)

Going off-trail means taking more risks. And indeed, we encountered three challenges: 😨

1. Greenland dogs are among the most isolated dog breeds in the world because they are not allowed to mix with other breeds. They look cute because of their white fur, but their closest relatives are wolves, so they are certainly not lap dogs. When we walked 350 meters (0.2 miles) away from them, 2-3 dogs ran after us, and we had to run further away from them as well; it felt somewhat scary. 🐕

2. Because we were running, we had no chance to find the best route—there were (shallow) swamps everywhere, likely due to the snowmelt. At one point, I had to carry Evelyn to help her walk/run through the swamps. My hiking shoes were completely soaked. My husband was the last to chase away the dogs using trekking poles. 😅

3. To reach the viewpoint, we had to cross a glacier covered in snow. It looked fine from above, but you can never know if there is an open crevasse underneath. Again, we used the trekking poles as potential rescue tools. 🏔️

Ilulissat Icefjord, located 250 km north of the Arctic Circle and just south of the town of Ilulissat, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 because of its natural beauty and the significance of the fast-moving Jacobshavn Glacier in developing the current scientific understanding of climate change. 🧊

I have spoken to expats who have lived in Ilulissat for decades, and they said that ten years ago, they could drive snowmobiles on the sea because it was frozen; now, that is no longer possible. There also hasn’t been significant snowfall in the last few winters, and when they were younger, heavy snowfall was very common during the winter, often continuing for days or weeks. 🌨️

So, climate change is real and happening right before their eyes! 😿

The reason I planned this remote adventure trip to Greenland is that I felt a sense of urgency; in a decade, the majority of these icebergs and the ice fjord will have shrunk significantly. Right now, Greenland is still untouched in many ways, and the Inuit culture has been well preserved. Next year, the new Ilulissat airport will open, allowing large aircraft to land here. I want to avoid the large tourist crowds and the commercial vibe. 😅
