The photos that popped up in my Facebook memories today were from our benandjerrys Climate Change College trip to the Arctic – a full 20 years ago!! Absolutely amazing to look back on, can’t believe how lucky I was to have this experience. I would give anything to go back again one day but in the meantime I have to make do with enjoying all the beautiful images and videos on the visitgreenland page ❤️🇬🇱 Have to say it also brings back a lot of sadness to look at our amazing expedition leaders Marc and Philip, who lost their lives on a later trip to the Canadian Arctic. What a huge loss, and how much better the world would be with them both still in it.

After having our flight rescheduled twice by icelandair and experiencing an additional three hours of delay, we were excited to board the Dash-8 aircraft (a 37-passenger jet) to fly to our destination, Ilulissat, Greenland. 🇬🇱

Halfway through the flight, we received a pre-warning from the captain that there was thick fog, and if it didn’t clear up within an hour, we wouldn’t be able to land.

When the landing gear was deployed, we thought we could touch down. However, the first landing attempt failed, and the flight circled around for approximately 30 minutes while waiting to see if another aircraft could land in Ilulissat. That aircraft also couldn’t land. The captain then announced that we needed to refuel at the nearest airport, which was Kangerlussuaq (another 30 minutes in the air).

I was really hoping we could successfully land there; otherwise, we would have to "call Houston". 😨

It was a relief as soon as we hit the ground. The airport and the settlement are tiny—a population of 400 residents. It truly felt like the middle of nowhere. We were hoping to get out in Kangerlussuaq and hop on the next available Air Greenland flight to Ilulissat, but that was not possible. I think the tiny settlement simply cannot accommodate an extra 40 people (there is not enough food and accommodation, though there is certainly enough water; people just drink from the glaciers).

So, after nearly six hours in transit, we had to fly back to Iceland again. It was a bummer.

On the way back, the food in the cabin was all sold out. The 3.5-hour flight felt very long. 🥱

The flight attendant told me that this situation happens once every 2-3 months during the summer (with daily flights to Ilulissat), but we happened to experience it this time.

Wish us luck in catching the next flight to Greenland! 🍀
