🌍 **Myths of the Mercator Map | Maps & Misconceptions by The Rum Diary**

Have you ever wondered why Greenland appears almost as large as Africa on a world map? Or whether the world we see on maps is truly how it looks?

Meet the **Mercator Projection** — one of the most famous map projections in history, but also one of the most misunderstood. Created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, this projection revolutionised navigation while significantly distorting the apparent size of countries and continents.

From exaggerated landmasses to geographical misconceptions, let`s uncover what the Mercator Map gets right, what it gets wrong, and how the way we see our world can sometimes be misleading.

Because **the world is much bigger, and more fascinating, than a flat map can show!**

🧭 Let`s challenge what we think we know, one map at a time!

**Maps & Misconceptions by The Rum Diary**

🌍 **The Mercator Map | Maps & Misconceptions by The Rum Diary**

Introduced in 1569 by Flemish cartographer **Gerardus Mercator**, this world map revolutionised navigation by preserving directions and angles, making it invaluable to sailors. However, it came with a geographical illusion — landmasses farther from the Equator, such as Russia and Canada, appear much larger than their actual size.

A revolutionary tool for navigation, but not an accurate reflection of the world`s true proportions!

🧭 **Sometimes, the way we see the world isn`t quite how it really is!**

"Greenland is as large as Africa"

Reality: At approximately 30.37 million square kilometers, Africa is over 14 times the size of Greenland, which measures 2.16 million square kilometers. Indeed, the geographic area of Africa is large enough to encompass the contiguous United States, China, India, Western Europe, and Japan.

#visitgreenland #visitafrica _visit.africa_ visit.greenland

"Alaska is larger than Brazil"

Reality: On Mercator maps, Alaska looks about the same size as Brazil. In reality, Brazil is nearly five times bigger than Alaska and is actually larger than the lower 48 states combined.

Greenland’s icebergs get plenty of attention. But there’s so much more to the story.

Our Polar & Latin America Specialist, Jonny Livingstone, recently travelled along Greenland’s west coast, spending time with local Inuit communities in Ilulissat and Sisimiut. From learning the polka and sampling suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic soup, to discovering the colourful settlements and extraordinary landscapes of Disko Bay, it was a journey that went well beyond the scenery.

It’s experiences like these that make first-hand knowledge so valuable. Our specialists travel to deepen their understanding of the places we recommend, bringing home the little details, local insights and personal encounters that help us create more thoughtful journeys for our clients.

A glimpse of Greenland through Jonny’s lens. 🇬🇱

Tasiilaq is a remote town located on Ammassalik Island in southeastern Greenland, positioned roughly 106 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle . As the largest settlement on Greenland`s eastern coast with a population of around 2,000, it serves as the primary gateway to the vast and rugged wilderness of East Greenland . The town is perched on a hilly landscape overlooking a natural harbour, surrounded by dramatic mountains, deep fjords, and pristine Arctic terrain. Despite its isolation, Tasiilaq has become a hub for adventure seekers and travellers drawn to its untouched beauty and authentic Inuit culture.

The town was founded in 1894 as a Danish trading station, though the area has been inhabited by Inuit peoples for centuries . For a long time, East Greenland remained one of the most isolated regions in the world, with little contact from the outside until the late 19th century . This isolation helped preserve a strong sense of local identity and traditional practices. Today, hunting and dog sledding remain important parts of life, and Tasiilaq is one of the few places where you can still witness traditional Inuit drum dances performed . The Ammassalik Museum, housed in the town`s original church, offers deeper insight into the region`s history and culture .

Visitors to Tasiilaq can experience a wide range of Arctic adventures across the seasons. In summer, the long daylight hours invite hiking through flower valleys, kayaking among icebergs, and boat tours to the Sermilik Icefjord . Winter brings opportunities for dog sledding, snowmobiling, and viewing the northern lights . With its dramatic scenery, rich cultural heritage, and position as the gateway to East Greenland`s wilderness, Tasiilaq offers a truly unforgettable Arctic experience.
