Greenland`s west coast is home to a mesmerising array of natural wonders and colourful towns steeped in rich cultural heritage – and you can experience its highlights on an epic summer adventure combining stays in Nuuk, Ilulissat and Ilimanaq 🇬🇱

After a night in Copenhagen, you`ll fly out to Nuuk – one of the world`s smallest and most remote capital cities, spread along a rocky outcrop at the entrance to one of the world`s largest fjord systems.

Then, you`ll head north to Ilulissat, 300 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle. Here, you`ll hike to the ancient Inuit settlement of Sermermiut, go whale watching and weave among colossal icebergs on the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord.

Finally, you`ll sail south for an unforgettable stay at Ilimanaq Lodge – a collection of eco-friendly, timber-clad bungalows in a small settlement on the shore of Disko Bay.

All in all, it`s a thoroughly captivating and awe-inspiring introduction to one of the most remarkable regions on Earth.

🇬🇱 Postcard and 19 photos/films from Sisimiut

Four days in Greenland’s second largest city with a local and welcoming athmosphere.

A picturesque city and beautiful winter landscape. Sled dogs, snowscooter, walks and some local food from the wild nature.

Hunting Northern lights on a spectacular night. “Hip hip” at the Arctic Circle Race.

Things that will stay with me:

🐳 The massive jaws from Auerrotusoq and Icon of Sisimiut – the whale was caught in 1905 and was 20 meters in length and weighing 60 tons.

🦭 Seal tasting – raw heart ♥️ and blubber

🦌 Tupilak – carved figures from local artists, meant to protect their owner from enemy attack. Tupilak in Greenlandic means an ancestor’s soul or spirit. Mine is made from reindeer antlers and local artist

🏡 Old houses and church from the Danish Colonial times

🐾  Sled Dog Town

🚢 Harbour and maritime city vibes

No hotel. No check-in. No itinerary.

This is what a night on the ice looks like in East Greenland. A sleeping bag on snow and ice, boots drying in the last light, a rifle within reach – not for sport, but because the Arctic demands it. The boat is moored to the edge of the ice, ready for whenever the next move comes.

For hunters in East Greenland, this is not roughing it. This is how it`s done. Sleep where the journey pauses. Wake when the light returns. Move when the ice allows.

❄️ Fun fact: In Greenlandic hunting culture, the rifle is considered essential safety equipment – protection against polar bears in remote areas. It is carried with the same matter-of-fact practicality as a compass or a pair of boots.

Some nights, the most luxurious thing in the world is silence and a horizon that belongs to no one.

One boat in a fjord full of ice.

Navigating East Greenland`s waters in summer means reading a landscape that changes by the hour. Ice floes drift, merge, and break apart. Channels open and close. What was passable this morning may not be by afternoon.

Local boat captains don`t follow charts here – they follow the ice. Every journey is a negotiation between where you want to go and where the fjord will let you.

💡 Useful tip: Boat trips in East Greenland are weather- and ice-dependent. Flexibility is not optional – it`s the entire point. The best experiences happen when you stop planning and start responding.

Out here, the sea sets the schedule.

Why are the houses in Greenland so colourful?

The colourful houses date back to the colonial era of the 1700s, when colours were used to indicate the function of each building. At the time, there were no street names or house numbers – colours became a simple and effective way to navigate.

🔴 Red – churches, schools, teachers’ or ministers’ houses
🟡 Yellow – hospitals and healthcare staff
🟢 Green – originally radio, now telecommunications
🔵 Blue – fish factories
⚫ Black – police stations

Today, this system is no longer in use – and houses are painted in all kinds of colours. Purple, pink, and soft pastels have become part of the cityscape, giving communities an even more vibrant and personal feel.

So next time you see a colourful community in Greenland, you’ll know it’s not just about aesthetics – but about history, tradition, and change.

—

As Greenlandic tourism enters a new era in 2026, our strength isn’t just the ice—it’s the people. Especially the women leading, guiding, and redefining travel in the North.

From Anne Nivíka Grødem of Visit Greenland to entrepreneurs like Mia Biilmann Larsen (CEO & Pilot at AirZafari), women are driving a more sustainable and inclusive tourism model. They are pilots, cultural storytellers, and innovators ensuring that growth benefits every town and settlement.

Today, gender is no longer a boundary. More women are leading dog sled expeditions and navigating fjords—proving that leadership in tourism is evolving.

Investing in women-led initiatives is not just about equality—it’s about building a resilient future. 🗺️✨

How is your organization championing diverse leadership this year?

🇬🇱 Postcard and 20 photos from Nuuk

Four days in Greenland’s capital. Winter light, snowshoes on frozen ground, a boat ride through the Nuuk fjords, and a stillness that only exists this far north.

Things that will stay with me:

🚺  The statue to honor Arnarulunnquaq — the only female arctic explorer, who joined Knud Rasmussen’s legendary 5th Thule Expedition 1921–24. She repaired the equipment with a needle. A quiet hero.

🗿 The Tupilak collection is unlike anything I’ve seen — and mummies from the 15th century, dressed in clothing strikingly similar to the traditional Greenlandic costumes we know today. Time changes and human life is somehow the same.. something to think about.

🦭 “Brættet” — the city’s market, where hunters and gatherers bring their catch. No photos allowed. But seal, white fish, game from the mountains… this is real food from a real place.

🍽️ And the meals: musk ox, whale, local fish. Raw, pure, northern – but you have to hunt it, since you can also find lots of international foods..

💧 The tap water tastes like a mountain spring. Pure, cold and absolutely delicious.
