Na drugom kraju fjorda dugog 180 kilometara nalazi se najprometnija zračna luka na Grenlandu, Kangerlussuaq. Nešto više od 500 građana brine se da život u ovom epicentru prometa na Grenlandu teče po planu.
Od 1941. do 1992. Kangerlussuaq je bio američka vojna baza. Glavna zadaća baze postala je servisirati ih u vezi s korejskim ratom i hladnim ratom.
Kangerlussuaq se nekoć zvao danskim imenom Sondre Stromfjord. Kangerlussuaq je grenlandski naziv i znači „dugi fjord“.
Nekada je bio ljetno lovište naroda Inuita. Prije otprilike 4000 god. kultura Saqqaq je ovo mjesto koristila kao ljetno lovište. Od tada su kulture Dorset i Thule, također, koristile Kangerlussuaq kao lovište. Danas su ova mjesta UNESCO-va svjetska baština.
Područje oko njega poznato je po vrlo stabilnim i toplim ljetima. Ovdje možete pronaći nevjerojatnu arktičku tundru s bogatim divljim životinjama ( mošusnim bikovima, sobovima, arktičkim lisicama, sokolovima, orlovima i gavranima ) i promatrati polarnu svjetlost.
Ovaj grad je i središte za znanstvena istraživanja, od kopnenih i morskih arktičkih ekosustava do geologije i atmosferskih istraživanja. Ceste, ledena ploča i ravna područja oko Kangerlussuaqa, također, se koriste kao poligoni za testiranje automobila u hladnim danima.
Ni na jednom drugom mjestu na Grenlandu ledena kapa nije tako dostupna kao ovdje. Do leda se može doći za nekoliko sati vožnje od sela, a čak ga možete vidjeti i iz naselja.

Ogni viaggio per me inizia prima della partenza, spesso con molto anticipo.
La prima volta che andai in Norvegia partii con molti mesi di anticipo. Stesso discorso per l`Islanda.
Ogni viaggio, poi, non sempre si conclude con il ritorno a casa.
In Norvegia, sempre lei, ci rimasi per oltre un anno e, ad essere sincera, una parte di me è ancora là. Il viaggio in Puglia del settembre 2023 è iniziato 35 anni fa e non è ancora finito.
Per la Groenlandia è stato diverso: son partita il giorno dopo, con il secondo volo: Copenaghen – Narsarsuaq. Ma comunque, anche da lì, non son proprio sicura di essere tornata del tutto.
Ogni tanto mi scopro alienata. Scopro che la mia mente si è rifugiata là, a ridosso del Circolo Polare Artico, 61° di latitudine nord, nel silenzio.
Cosa ti manca della Groenlandia? Il silenzio.
Ma poi, cosa significa Groenlandia?
Narsarsuaq, Brattahlíð, Qordlortoq, Tasiusaq, Sillisit, Igaliku.
Pochi km quadrati di un territorio vasto oltre ogni umana immaginazione, dove anche il pensiero si perde a pensarlo, un territorio così.
Green Land. Narra la leggenda che Erik il Rosso battezzò così la terra su cui si trovò esiliato, con lo scopo di attirare quanti più coloni possibili dall`Islanda, Ice Land, la terra del ghiaccio. Marketing ante litteram.
Io non lo so cosa vide, Erik il Rosso. So cosa ho visto io. So cosa ho camminato, cosa ho respirato, cosa ho sentito. Cosa non ho sentito. Il silenzio, dicevamo.
Ritmi antichi ed essenziali, tramandati di generazione in generazione, gli antenati riposano sulle colline davanti al fiordo, sui campi che hanno contribuito a fondare. Godono di una pace antica, un ritorno a fondersi materialmente con la terra sferzata dai venti del Nord, ovattata nella luce fioca di un mattino nebbioso.
Se provo a raccontare della tundra, degli arbusti, gli acquitrini, i sentieri delle pecore, i voli delle aquile, il lavoro dei cani pastore.
Se provo a raccontare dell`aria gelida che spira dalla calotta polare.
Resti di animali, resti di lingue glaciali, le regole non sovrascrivibili di terre dure, avare, rigogliose. Maestose, ho i brividi.
