The fascination with ice and bears made Greenland a dream destination for a long time.
We decided rather suddenly to travel there this summer, ‘before the Americans would claim it’.
East Greenland is remote and sparsely populated; it was difficult and pricey to find an insurance covering SAR here. Because of the complex logistics (in the summer you can only move around by boat or helicopter) and danger of polar bears (you need to carry a rifle), we chose to travel in a group.
Kulusuk, a village of 250 is relatively easy to reach from Iceland. There are daily flights from Reykjavik in a small, noisy aircraft; about half of the flights get cancelled because of the unpredictable and fast changing weather in the Arctic. After 1 hr and 30 min we landed at Kulusuk airport, a dirt strip surrounded by mountains.
We spent one night in Kulusuk, then the following day we took a speed boat to Karale area, the start of our 10 days trek. Our skipper very skilfully zig-zagged between chunks of ice, some the size of warehouses. The 150 km trek from Karale to Tasillaq Fjord passes some incredible scenery, incomparable to anything we’ve experienced before.

Qassiarsuk is a tiny settlement of 50 people on the opposite side of the fjord from Narsarsuaq in south Greenland. It was here that Erik the Red arrived from Iceland in 982 and built his farmstead called Brattahild. Erik was the first Norse and first European settler in Greenland and thus in North America as a whole. The first image is of a relief commemorating the 1000th anniversary of his arrival and the second is a reconstruction of his longhouse. Around 1000 his son Leif returned from Norway after converting to Christianity. His mother Tjodhilde was baptised and built the first church in Greenland and North America. The third image is a reconstruction of the tiny 2m x 3.5m church. Leif sailed further west and discovered new land which he called Vinland, part of present Canada. All of this happened 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

Töö Blue Ice Exploreris on põnev ja sageli kaootiline. Täna algas hommik kell 8.15 ja esimene sõit pidi olema alles 10.40, seega rahulikult, sain arvutisse oma praktika tarvis tehtud igapäeva märkmed üles laetud ja kui homme lendan tagasi ning aega nn mölutamiseks, ehk panen oma teisipäevase praktika kaitsmise tarvis aruanded kokku.
Igatahes tuli teade, et paat saabub varem sadamasse ja pean juba 10.10 inimesed hotellist peale võtma. Iseenesest varasem saabumine oli hea, kuna planeerisin hostelisse appi koristama minna, so kahe sõidu vahel – 45 minutiks. Hostelis jõudsin ühe toa tolmuimejaga puhtaks teha, kui sain Linnilt kõne, et pean minema lennujaama kahte inimest otsima. Kes need on, seda me ei teadnud (mehed, naised?? ), teadaime vaid, et äkki ühest grupist on 2 inimest puudu. Teada oli vaid grupi nimi. Kui lennujaama jõudsin, oli maja esine paksult rahvast täis, kuidas ma leian need inimesed???? Bussist välja astudes nägin järgmise maja, so meie kohviku ees autost väljumas oma bossi kes lehvitas mulle, st sain aru et võin sinna sõita. Kontorisse jõudes selgus, et ta juba otsis neid ja ka ei leidnud. See teema on hetkeks laualt maas.
Umbes lõuna ajal, kui kedagi sadamast ära tõin, lehvitas üks õngega ja kalaga mees tee peal, kes palus peatuda. Tal on käes lihtsalt suur kala ja õng ning ta soovis bussi peale tulla ja abi, et kus ta selle kala saab ära puhastada ja söögiks valmistada. Lahtise kalaga ma teda autosse, teiste klientide sekka, võtta ei saanud. Tahtsin teda väga aidata – saime kuidagi selle kala kilekotti, kus juba ees oli pisklike kala ning sõit võis uue reisijaga jätkuda.
Ühel päeval kui taas Laxa’lt tulnud jahiseltskonda sõidutasin, uurisin mis nad saagiks said? Neil oli palju õnne mh said 4 muskusveist, millest ühe pilti nad minuga lahkelt jagasid.

The Ilulissat Icefjord, Greenland. My first day in Ilulissat was a beautiful one with lots of sunshine and blue skies. The perfect day for a hike along the shores of the famous Icefjord. The fjord at this point is almost completely packed with ice, allowing for very little open water. The only sounds were the birds and the calving icebergs. Such an amazing experience. I also took time to visit the Icefjord Center which is a beautifully designed building fitting perfectly into its surroundings.
